FIELD OF STUDY: AGRICULTURE / ECTS: 4 / semester: 9 Form and level: NI Status: obligatory Prerequisites: None The process of international economic development, with special attention to rural areas and the agricultural sector. The factors responsible for growth and transformation in urban and rural areas. Government policies that enhance the prospects for growth and environmental sustainability. The linkages among the industrial, natural resource and agricultural sectors. Methods for analyzing the agricultural sector to determine better policies. |

Lectures (No of hrs.): 15 1.Introduction: nature of economic development 2.Definitions of rural areas in different countries, 3.The traditional and new (additional) role of agriculture in selected countries 4.Demography of rural areas - new threats and challenges 5.Cultural heritage of rural areas and community development 6.Income inequality and poverty in rural areas 7.Rural areas and agriculture in conflicting countries/ regions 8.Institutional support of rural development – national and international 9.Controversial issues of agriculture and rural and ag policies 10.Controversial issues of agriculture – cont. 11.Traditional vs. modern agriculture (small farms, commercial farms) 12.International NGOs focused on rural development 13.Arguments of anti- and alter- globalists relating to agriculture and rural issues 14.Factors of non-agricultural economic activities and rural areas development 15.Summary, additional information on selected topics related to IRD Classes (15 hrs): 1.Introduction: information on classes organization, team or individual tasks, credit requirements, etc. 2.– 14. Presentations of chosen topics elaborated by individuals or teams / discussion on presented topics Suggested: wide range of rural issues - including different countries social, economic, environmental aspects (preferably non-EU) 15. Knowledge: Student acquires knowledge of agricultural development as part of overall economic development. Skills: Student is able to look at more aggregate perspective, from economy-wide level or level of rural development. Social competences: Understanding of the socio-economic and political aspects of rural development. |
Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
Methods and criteria of grading: Lectures: Written: three questions and one issue analysis. Each for 2 – 5 points: Total: max. 4 x 5 points = 20 points . -Grade E (2.0) Does not know basic data and characteristics of the most important economic, social, and environmental relations and processes. Does not identify crucial sources of information and basic EU institutions shaping agricultural and rural policy. -Grade D (3.0) Selectively knows only approximately some data, superficially characterizes some issues. -Grade C (3.5) Correctly characterizes the majority of issues, knows some data, some sources of information; knows some required data. Correctly, but superficially characterizes trends in rural development in EU. -Grade B (4.0) Characterizes the most important issues. trends in rural development, knows required data; lists and describes the most important institutions performing key role in rural development. -Grade B+ (4.5) Sufficiently characterizes required issues, trends, knows required data, knows and explains the ongoing processes, knows reliable sources of information. -Grade A (5.0) Entirely characterizes required issues, trends, data, knows and explains the ongoing processes, knows arguments of supporters and opponents to present-day rural development policy, controversial issues. Classes: based on the quality of elaboration and presentation of the chosen topic. Final mark = 0.6 x exam grade (lectures) + 0.4 x summary mark (exercises). COMMENT: The lecturer, based on the degree of the student's mastery of the curriculum content of the subject, based on his own didactic experience, formulates the assessment using the formal criteria set out above |
