Skrócony opis:

The main aim of the course is to provide information about structure and function of selected plant organisms, that have a various influence on the environment and human existence, as well as basic information about inheritance rules. The course covers the following contents: Differences in the structure of pro-and eukaryotes cells. Structure and function of basic cellular structures. Characteristics of plant tissues. Structure and modification of plant organs. Sexual reproduction and the forms of vegetative propagation of plants. The history of some crop plants: some species of Brassicaceae and cereals. Biodiversity and the impact of plants importance of plants in the human community economy, protection of biodiversity. Explanation of the main genetic rules using mitosis and meiosis, main allelic and non-allelic inheritance patterns.

Pełny opis:

Lectures (10 hrs):

1. Criteria for living organisms classification. Structure and origin of the plant cell - 1 h.

2. Specialization and the origin of higher plant tissues - 1 h.

3. Sexual reproduction of Angiospermae. Elements of inflorescence. Development of male and female gametophyte. Pollination biology – pollination and double fertilization in angiosperms. Classification and structure of fruit and seeds. Vegetative propagation - 2h.

4. The history of selected crop plants origin. Biodiversity and its protection - 1 h.

5. The basic concepts of genetics: DNA, genes and chromosomes, DNA replication and expression of genetic information, genotype and phenotype - 2h.

6. Mendelian genetics and chromosomal basis of inheritance - 1 h.

7. Extentions of Mendelian genetics and quantitative genetics - 1 h.

8. Source of genetic variation - 1 h.

Lab classes (20 hrs):

1. Principles of microscopy and observation of the living plant cell - 2 h

2. Classification and observation of selected plant tissues - 2 h

3. Plant organs: morphology and anatomy of the shoot and root - the primary structure - 2 h

4. Secondary shoot and root formation, leaf morphology and anatomy - 2h.

5. Plant storage materials - 2 hours.

6. Cell cycle and nuclear reproduction (mitosis, meiosis) - 2 hours.

7. Monohybrid and dihybrid crosses - Mendel’s lows of segregation and independent inheritance - 2 hours.

8. Gene mapping using two and three-point testcrosses, F2 generation - 2 hours.

9. Inheritance analysis of continuous traits - 2 hours.

10. Practical application of genetics in plant breeding - 2 hours.

• acquire the basic information about genome construction and function

•characterization of the source of genetic variation

• can prepare basic plant slides for microscopic analysis

• properly analyze the microscopic anatomic plant slides

• description the basic inheritance models

• draw and use pedigrees to display and understand the pattern of single gene inheritance as well as predict relatedness

• the solving the genetics problems

Students:

• receive an incentive for self-study and improvement of the botanical knowledge

• respect the biodiversity and its importance to maintain the quality of life

Lab classes

• An examination of microscope slides, working individually and in teams of two people

• Four written tests

• Activity in the class discussion

Overall rating: Average grad based on scores obtained in the class

Lectures

• a written examination (test questions, and short quiz)

Grade E (2.0) Very low level of understanding , less than 45%

Grade D (3.0) Basic information about the lectures and lab practicals, 45-55%

Grade C (3.5) Ability to discuss any problem at the intermediate level 60%

Grade B (4.0) Good understanding of the subject, ability to ask about different issues, 70%

Grade B+ (4.5) Very good knowledge about the subject, student is interested in the subject and asks for more information, works on his own 85%

Grade A (5.0) Excellent understanding, full discussion, very good lab practicals more than 90%
