A primary goal of this course is to understand the origins, major concepts, and current issues of sustainability in horticulture. We will place special emphasis on challenges to global food security, constraints on the conventional farming system, and sustainable strategies to increase food production. A special focus of the course will be on the horticultural production practices for enhance soil fertility and environmental protection.

Sustainable agriculture – concepts, principles, challenges. Farming systems: biodynamic, integrating and organic.

The environmental factors affecting horticulture plant crop.

Agrotechnical factors – tillage, crop rotation, irrigation.

Soil quality and fertility management. Plant nutrient requirements.

Inorganic and organic fertilizers and application strategies.

Food quality and safety (from field to table). Decorative value of ornamental plants.

Environmental sounds of agricultural practice.

Physical and chemical properties of soil. Soil acidity. Measuring soil acidity, pH, EC.

Fertility Management. Methods of soil/substrate analysis.

Fertility Management. Plant material (indicatory parts) analysis.

Alimentary needs and fertilization requirements of the plants. Dependences of fertilization and nutritive quality of fruits and vegetables.

Excursion – a visit to the greenhouse horticulture farm.
