Protection of biodiversity of rural areas

Protection of biodiversity of rural areas gives the students basic information of biological diversity concepts and levels.

Lectures are focused on forms of nature and biodiversity protection on rural areas. Classes are concentrated on comparison of biodiversity strategies in particular countries.

Lectures:

1. Definition of the biological diversity.

2. Main resolutions of the Biodiversity Convention.

3. Gene resources protection – gene banks (especially of useful species), native races and varieties protection, fragmentation of habitat opposition.

4. Threats and protection of species: red lists and books, protection “in situ” and “ex situ”, protection of the threatened weed species.

5. Biodiversity protection on the ecosystems level – renaturalization of changed and degraded ecosystems.

6. Seminatural communities protection.

7. Importance of territorial protection in the preservation of ecosystem diversity.

8. Paneuropean Strategy of Biodiversity Protection.

9. State and protection strategy of biodiversity in Poland.

10-11. National parks and nature reserves in Poland.

12-13. Landscape parks and protected landscape areas in Poland.

14-15. Nature monuments, documentation sites, ecological areas and landscape-nature complexes in Poland.

Classes:

1-5. Realization of biodiversity protection idea in particular countries.

6. Introduction to field classes.

7-15. Field classes on the area of Ojców National Park and Małopolska Landscape Park Complex – agriculture and nature protection on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland.

Knowlege:

Student has an elementary knowledge about the protection of biodiversity on rural areas,

Student knows the low basis and the organization of environmental protection in Poland

Student has a basic knowledge of national and international forms of biodiversity protection

Skills:

Student can independently acquire knowledge in the field of nature conservation using materials available in books, magazines and on relevant websites

Student can prepare and give a presentations on biodiversity protection,

Social competence:

Student is convinced of the need for action to protect biodiversity,

Student knows the need to respect the copyrights.

Exam in the form of a written test; for a positive grade at least 60% of the correct answers should be given; the share of the lecture grade in the final grade is 50%.

A positive oral presentation should be properly prepared; the share of the final grade of the exercises in the final grade is 50%.
