Students will learn the process of plant breeding that leads to the development of new, advanced cultivars of arable and vegetable crops. They will learn methods of conventional breeding based on crosses and principles of biotechnological methods that can be used to support breeding efforts. These will include plant cell and tissue culture in vitro, molecular diagnostics and plant genetic modification. During practicals students will experience issues related to evaluation of breeding materials, they will establish tissue culture of selected species and assess breeding materials using various molecular techniques of DNA analysis.
Students will learn the process of plant breeding that leads to the development of new, advanced cultivars of arable and vegetable crops. They will learn how to utilize genetic resources to create new variation and what methods like crossing, selfing, inbreeding and mutagenesis are applied in breeding programs. Breeding programs leading to development and registration of new open-pollinating and F1 hybrid cultivars will be presented. Conventional breeding will be extended to biotechnological methods useful in breeding process. These will include in vitro techniques, like micropropagation, selection and haploid production. Molecular breeding will focus on the use of various DNA analyses techniques for diagnostic purposes, like marker assisted selection and hybrid purity. Development and importance of genetically modified crops will be discussed. During practicals, students will compare breeding materials with regard to their morphological characters and the content of the selected chemical components. They will learn how to establish plant tissue culture, micropropagate and induce development of haploids. Students will work with DNA and generate molecular markers based on PCR technique, separate them in gels and interpret observed variation of polymorphic markers. Students will prepare an essay about breeding of the selected crop.
