The plant protection program develops core disciplinary knowledge and skills in plant protection. Compulsory courses cover resistance plant breeding and pest management in sustainable agriculture and the integration of these disciplines.

Graduates possess an understanding of key principles and their application in professional practice.

Pełny opis:

Fundamentals of plant protection gives the students basic information on plant protection. Lectures are focused on the description of main groups of plant pests and pathogens, methods of their determination, and methods of plant protection. In practicals, the students will work with pests and pathogens, determine them and learn to choose the optimal methods of their control. Basic methods of teaching: lectures, practical exercises.

Lectures

1. Introduction to plant protection, aim of the subject, basic terms, relation to other subjects.

2. Plant pathogens: viruses: symptoms, structure, transmission, vectors, disease cycle, detection, methods of plant protection.

3. Plant pathogens: bacteria: symptoms, structure, disease cycle, detection, methods of plant protection.

4. Plant pathogens: fungi: symptoms, structure, taxonomy, disease cycle, detection, methods of plant protection.

5. Plant pests: nematodes - characteristics, biology, economically important species.

6. Plant pests: mites: characteristics, biology, economically important species.

7. Plant pests: slugs, mammals: characteristics, biology, economically important species.

8-9. Plant pests: insects: characteristics, biology, economically important species.

10-11. Chemical plant protection - pesticides, composition, use, efficiency, resistence, legislation.

12. Non-chemical plant protection - good agricultural practice.

13. Biological plant protection - principles, parasitoids, pathogens, conditions for use, efficiency.

14. Monitoring and management in plant protection.

15. Environmental impact of plant protection.

5. Diseases and pests of pea, bean, soya.

Classes:

Evaluation of the ability to recognize pests and diseases and

evaluation of reports (classes 1-15)

Lectures:

written test exam (about 20 questions from the entire range of the subject with four response options), 0 or 1 pt. for each question

Grade E (2.0) Does not have the knowledge about the fundamentals of plant protection. The student does not have knowledge about main groups of plant pests and pathogens, about methods of pesticide application, knowledge about forecasting of pests and diseases, safe use of pesticides and their effect on environment. Cannot describe and determine pests and pathogens of crops. Cannot choose the optimal method of pest and diseases control. The student does not have the ability to gather and interpret relevant data.

Grade D (3.0) The student has poor knowledge about the fundamentals of plant protection, main groups of plant pests and pathogens, predicting pests and diseases appearance, safe use of pesticides and their effect on environment. Selectively describes and determines some pests and pathogens of crops. Knows some methods of pesticide application.

Grade C (3.5) The student knows basic about main groups of plant pests and pathogens, predicting pests and diseases appearance, about methods of pesticide application and safe use of pesticides and their effect on environment. Knows how to forecast pest and diseases appearance. Correctly characterizes and determines the main pests and pathogens of crops.

Grade B (4.0) The student has the knowledge about the fundamentals of plant protection. The student has good knowledge about main groups of plant pests and pathogens, about methods of pesticide application and safe use of pesticides and their effect on environment. Correctly characterizes and determines the most important pests and pathogens of crops.

Grade B+ (4.5) The student has very good knowledge about the fundamentals of plant protection. The student sufficiently characterizes main groups of plant pests and pathogens, knows methods of pesticide application and safe use of pesticides and explains their effect on environment. Correctly characterizes and determines pests and pathogens of crops and can has very good knowledge predicting pests and diseases appearance,. Selects and modifies the optimal methods of pest and diseases control.

Grade A (5.0) The student has excellent knowledge about the fundamentals of plant protection. The student entirely characterizes main groups of plant pests and pathogens, knows and explains methods of pesticide application and safe use of pesticides. Analyzes and explains the impact of pesticides on environment. Entirely characterizes and determines pests and pathogens of crops. Knows how to forecast pest and diseases appearance and can apply it practically. Can choose and modifies the most optimal methods of pest and diseases control.
