(tylko po angielsku) Field of study: Agriculture/ ECTS:4/ semester: 1 Profile: General academic / Form and level: MSc Status: major/facultative Prerequisities: botany, genetics, plant physiology The course will provide students with information on the use of biotechnological methods in plant production: in vitro cultures, biotechnological plant improvement, molecular diagnostics and its application as well as social and legal aspects of biotechnology. |

(tylko po angielsku) Lectures: 1. The components of plant tissue culture media 2. The effect of physical factors on tissue culture 3. The principal methods of plant micropropagation 4. Haploid plant production, methods and advantages of DH line production in plant breeding 5. In vitro selection and its application in screening germplasm of desirable traits 6-7. The application of tissue culture in germplasm preservation and generation new source of variation for plant breeding (hybridization, wide crossing, mutagenesis) 8-10. The molecular diagnostics and its application in agriculture 11-13. The biotechnological methods for plant improvement 14-15. Use of genetically modified organisms in agricultural - genetically modified varieties. Social and legal aspects of GMOs. Perspectives on the use of GMOs in agriculture Classes: 1-2. The preparation of tissue culture medium 3-4. The callus induction in carrot model culture 5-7. The morphological and biochemical characteristics of callus, spectrophotmetrical pigment content determination 8-10. DNA isolation 11-13. The application of PCR for amplification of unknown DNA fragments and defined genes 14-15. Visualization and interpretation of the PCR results Structure of student activity: Lectures and classes realized with direct contribution of lecturer: 30 hrs 1.2 ECTS including lectures: 15 hrs classes: 15 hrs Consultations: 8 hrs and contribution in exams: 2 hrs, 0.4 ECTS Self study: 60 hrs, 2.4 ECTS |

(tylko po angielsku) After the course student: Knowledge: - basic biotechnology terms and methods: in vitro culture, genetic engineering, molecular diagnostics - application of plant tissue cultures and genetic modification in agriculture - benefits and need of biotechnological methods application in agriculture Skills: - work in the tissue culture and molecular biology lab - prepare the medium for in vitro culture - perform nucleic acid amplification by PCR, visualize and interpret the results Social competences - organize and participate in the research team to conduct a specific experiment - understands the relation between genes and phenotype, biotechnology and agriculture |

Metody i kryteria oceniania: |
(tylko po angielsku) Lectures: Written test exam, for passing an examination at least 60% of questions should be answered correctly. The contribution of the evaluation of the lectures in the final grade is 50%. Classes: Evaluation of individual project. For passing laboratory classes the project should be properly executed. The contribution of the evaluation of laboratory classes in the final grade is 50%. |
