The course deals with reclamation concept and treatments on post-mining sites and addresses especially the issue of forest reclamation. The course includes landscape development and management background; ecology of post-mining sites, especially succession of forest ecosystem, plant and soil development; criterions of reclamation process assessment. Some issues of ecological engineering on post-industrial areas are included, as well.
Tree form and stem taper modeling. Tree-stem volume equations. Stem profile models and its use for determination of tree stem volume. Tree weight and biomass estimation. Forest Biomass - models for biomass estimation.
Forest site evaluation. Actual and potential site productivity. Phytocentric measures of site quality. Geocentric measures of site productivity. Factors affecting site productivity.
Growth relationship and their biometric formulation. Growth functions. Quantifying stand density. Tree competition indices.
Stand structure and its biometrical description. Effect of species mixture on stand growth.
Growth models of trees and stands. Forest dynamics and ecological basis for development of forest growth models (processes in stand, stand density and its effect on forest growth). Tree-level models.
Developing biomass and volume equations
Taper models and its use for determination of tree stem profile and tree volume
Site index models and its use for determination of potential site productivity
Demonstration of ability for practical use of growth models
Field training (one day – 8 hours):

Student has a knowledge about basic elements of restored ecosystem, technology of reclamation, risk assessment, and monitoring of developed ecosystem on disturbed sites exemplified on different mine sites in Poland and in the World.
Student can actively discuss in the group about studied issues and developed the impact of certain mine, industrial and reclamation activity on the environment in regional and global scale
